Objective
The objective is to secure
a project contract for DataRebels, Inc. as a Perl Developer, typically
as a Linux Performance Engineer.
I provide comprehensive technical and project management skills for small companies
or for large companies with small projects. The technical skills include using
Perl for custom monitoring, testing and reporting which are typically required
for performance projects. I also have extensive release management Perl script
experience using Clear Case and Subversion. With regards to project management
skills, my five years at Schwab required extensive documentation using the Unified
process. I'm comfortable and well adept at writing requirement or architecture
documents. I can also manage 3rd party relations as well as sub-contractors.
DataRebels is a web consulting company I own with my business partner, Joe Fong. All contracts must go through DataRebels. We have all the insurance to meet requirements from large like Schwab to small like Piczo. Discounted rates are given for 100% telecommute contracts as we have our own computing facilities and I prefer to work from our office.
Education
U.C. Berkeley (5/93 - 12/98), M.S. and B.S. in Software Engineering.
Graduate work focused on database visualization using Postgres under
Mike Stonebraker.

Contract Experience, 2000 - 2007
* Look Smart, Inc (06/07 - 10/07), (http://www.looksmart.com), Perl Developer and Linux Architect. I primarily wrote Perl scripts with 20% application performance enhancement and 80% system related for testing, monitoring and release management. My primary responsibility was implementing a new logical URL partitioning system for segmenting sets of URL's to various Linux clusters. This project was commissioned when the amount of data being served daily eclipsed the capacity of an individual server to handle the entire universe of URL's efficiently and hence logical partitioning was deemed necessary.
* Barclays Global International (12/06), Web Consultant. This was a one month consulting contract entailing 160 pages of Linux engineering performance enhancement documentation.
* Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. (09/06 - 04/07) , (http://www.schwab.com), Perl Batch Developer. I was responsible for writing various Perl and Korn shell batch scripts for the purpose of producing cost basis reports running against an Eagle cost-basis engine developed on an Oracle DB.
* Piczo, Inc. (5/05 - 03/06) (www.piczo.com) Linux Architect and Perl Developer. Responsible for architecting the growth from 13 to 215 Linux servers. Piczo realized an increase from 60Mbps-to-1 Gbps bandwidth on a LAMP architecture (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Memcache and Perl) in my tenure. I wrote operation's scripts to do such things as monitor availability, update MySQL, release management and to parse millions of lines of Apache log files per machine daily. Hands on experience with network switch load balancing using Coyote Point, Foundry and NetScaler hardware. I also wrote an image processing application developed in Perl using Image Magick.
* Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. (4/00 - 04/05), (www.schwab.com), Linux Performance Engineer, Web Trading and Financial Developer. At Schwab my time split between C/CGI application development and Perl systems development. I spent one year heading up the Linux migration project from AIX. I was the lead Linux engineer, analyst and consultant. I migrated a million lines of C code from AIX to Linux. I migrated the build and deployment AIX shell and Perl scripts to the Linux platform. I worked across the enterprise with a many business groups consulting on 3rd party needs and WebSphere/Java migration problems. In addition to the Linux migration I headed up another noteworthy project at Schwab. When Java was introduced to Schwab in 2001 it didn't replace C/CGI, but rather was an addition. I spent 2.5 years on major integration effort of Java and C platforms. An extensible system was built in Perl and is still in use today. This project required interaction with many development teams for requirements and integration.
